Stone disease is a very common problem all over the world. Approximately 60% of stones can be managed by lithotripsy and rest of stones needs various endourological procedures to remove the stones without open surgery.

Extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
A method of treating kidney and ureteric stones without surgery, using the Allengers lithotripter, one of the best machines available for the purpose. The positioning, focussing and delivery of shock waves are all controlled by advanced computerized system with safety cut-offs to prevent damage by human error. It can be performed without the need for anaesthesia, with a very high success rate and practically no complications. Patients does not need any hospital stay and can go home same day.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
In this procedure a small hole is made in skin to facilitate creation of a track into the kidney which is dialated. A nephroscope is passed through this track into the collecting system of the kidney to remove stones after breaking it into smaller pieces. There is a minimal pain and discomfort and patients can go home in 48 hours. Even bigger stones and stag horn stones can be safely managed with this modality. Some of the patients may also need help of lithotripsy to get complete stone removal.

Retrograde intra-renal stone surgery (RIRS)
Here a flexible ureteroscope(Storz Flex-X 2) is passed through the urethra and stones are removed after breaking into smaller pieces by using a 20 W Holmium laser(Lumenis). The laser can fragment even very hard stones into fine fragments resulting in high clearance rates. Here again patients can be discharged within 24 to 48 hours.

Men after the age of 50 years may suffer from urinary obstruction due to enlargement of the prostate, which can be removed safely by endoscopic method. In this procedure a resectoscope is PASSED through the urethra and the obstructing part of the prostate gland is removed endoscopically using electric cautery or laser as the energy source. The patient will be having a urethral catheter for 2 days after the procedure. There is minimal postoperative pain as there are no external incisions.

Performed using the most advanced fully computerised urodynamic machine manufactured by Laborie, which will diagnose all kinds of incontinence and difficulty in passing urine so as to enable the right treatment. These machines also include 'EMG' facilities that are a must for diagnosing urinary and bowel problems secondary to spinal injuries stroke, parkinsonism and other neurological disorders. This laboratory has well designed facilities for the entire range of studies including uroflownmetry, filling and voiding cystometry, urethral pressure profile studies (UPP) and VCUG (in addition to EMG and cavernosometry).

A problem of over 10% of adult population can be fully investigated and treated. The department provides specialized facilities for pharmacotherapy, cavernosometry and cavernosography, in addition to Doppler studies for assessment of blood flow. Penile implant are also implanted for the severe degree of impotence.

The department offers a complete range of facilities for investigation of male infertility. Female infertility investigation by gynaecologists with special training in infertility is also provided. Treatment is coordinated with the assisted conception unit and an 'IVF' laboratory.

All aspects of Endourology (surgery through a telescope, which does not require open procedures) including treatment of prostate (TURP), bladder cancers (TURBT), urethral strictures, kidney and ureteric stones (PCNL & URS) are available. Intracorporeal Lithotripsy (breaking of stones through endoscopes) using the pneumatic lithotripsy is also available.

Most of the urological procedures can be performed by keyhole surgery. Most of kidney surgery whether it is for benign disease or for cancer can be safely performed laparoscopically. This hospital offers all kinds of laparoscopic surgery for urological disease. Major advantages are less pain, small scar, early discharge and early return to work.

Urinary incontinence (urinary leak) and other urinary problems like urgency (going to the toilet frequently) and stress incontinence (leaking of urine with cough and laughing or straining) can be investigated and treated with minimally invasive methods like TVT-O.

Children suffer from various urological problems like congenital PUJ obstruction, vesico-ureteric reflux, hypospadias etc. which needs investigations. Most of the problems can be managed by endoscopic and laparoscopic methods.
